Young, beautiful and talented, they are symbols of a new and increasingly independent digital generation, capable of building a global reputation based on videos on the internet. On YouTube alone, there are more than 1 million followers, who watch performances that reach 10 million hits.
With a busy schedule, a participation in the series "Glee" and three studio albums under their belt, the classically trained rock stars have already won warm praise from people like Elton John and Stevie Vai. They have even been named as "leaders of a new musical revolution".
Aware of the exaggeration, Šulic and Hauser remain in tune with modesty: both state that, if the internet did not exist, they would probably be tending sheep and milking cows in the interior of Slovenia or Croatia, where they were born.
"The internet is everything for us. A shortcut for anyone who wants to show their music. You can do anything alone and reach a much larger audience than the radio", Luka Šulic tells UOL, speaking by phone from Nagoya , in Japan. "We're very visual, not just listening. It's interesting: our whole experience has to do with our performance."
For 2Cellos, the intersection between rock and classical is energy. "We started playing classics as a child, and everything evolved naturally. We wanted to do something exciting for the audience, especially so that younger people could get to know the cello. Combining the new and the old is interesting. And, regardless of the style of music, emotion is always the most important", says Stjepan Hauser.
