The greatest songs of the Queen of Fado in a symphonic version
The production combines Amália’s original voice — selected from historic recordings — with a full classical symphony orchestra under the direction of conductor Laurent Rossi, alongside a traditional Portuguese guitar trio and the interpretation of singer Anabela. The show also incorporates audiovisual projections blending archival images of the artist with contemporary visual elements, creating an immersive experience that expands the connection between fado and symphonic language.
The Brazilian tour of Amália Rodrigues Sinfónico begins in São Paulo on May 23 at the Teatro Bradesco, then continues to Belo Horizonte, where it will be presented at the Palácio das Artes on May 26, and concludes this journey in Rio de Janeiro at the historic Theatro Municipal on May 28.
In partnership with the Fundação Amália Rodrigues, the project is artistically directed by French conductor Laurent Rossi — a musician, producer, and musical director with a solid international career. Currently co-principal horn of the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra / Opera of the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon, Rossi is also founder of Rossio Music Publishing and responsible for the musical concept and arrangements that transport Amália’s repertoire into a symphonic dimension, preserving its identity while expanding its sonic power.
On stage, Amália Rodrigues’ original voice engages in dialogue with Portuguese singer Anabela, one of the most respected artists of her generation. With four decades of career, winner of the Grande Noite do Fado and the Festival da Canção de Portugal, Anabela has built a solid trajectory spanning popular music, fado, and musical theatre, recognized for her interpretative sensitivity and technical rigor. In the performance, her participation creates a bridge between tradition and contemporaneity.
The musical formation also includes a traditional fado trio — Portuguese guitar, viola de fado, and bass viola — essential elements in preserving the genre’s sonic essence, now integrated into the symphonic orchestra. The artistic concept further incorporates audiovisual projections featuring historical images of the artist combined with contemporary visual resources, expanding the narrative dimension of the performance.
The greatest reference of fado and one of the most remarkable voices of the 20th century, Amália Rodrigues (1920–1999) was the artist who projected Portuguese music internationally beginning in the 1940s. Her intense interpretation, combined with the incorporation of texts by major Portuguese poets, redefined the genre and consolidated fado as a universal expression. Her repertoire — including classics such as Barco Negro, Gaivota, Foi Deus, Cheira a Lisboa, and Uma Casa Portuguesa — remains a cultural heritage and an undeniable reference in world music.
