Biography
Carlos Marin was born in Germany to Spanish parents. He was raised and educated in Madrid and also lived in the Netherlands for a time. His musical talent manifested when he was still a child, and at just 8 years old, he released his first album “El Pequeño Caruso,” in which he performed classics such as “O Sole Mio” and “Granada,” among others.
At 10 years old, he released his second album, “Mijn Live Mama” (my dear mom, in Dutch), around the same time he began studying piano and solfège. He later took singing lessons with highly esteemed figures like Montserrat Caballé, Alfredo Krauss, and Jaume Aragall.
He quickly entered music competitions on Spanish TV, winning several, including on programs like “Gente Joven” and “Nueva Gente.” Over time, he honed his musical knowledge and training, allowing him to participate in important musicals and opera performances.
With a powerful baritone voice, Carlos performed in operas such as “La Traviata,” “The Barber of Seville,” “La Bohème,” and “Madame Butterfly.” In the musical theater scene, he took on significant roles in “Les Misérables,” “Man of La Mancha,” “Grease,” and “Beauty and the Beast,” among other productions.
In “Peter Pan,” he went beyond merely performing, co-producing and directing the musical with the experienced Alberto Quintero. Carlos also sang in the Tim Burton-directed animation “The Nightmare Before Christmas.”
The success of these works, in which Marin always stood out and received praise from both audiences and critics, would lead to even greater achievements in his career.
In 2003, producer Simon Cowell, known for his work on the musical reality shows “American Idol,” “The X Factor,” and “Britain’s Got Talent,” decided to invest in creating a group with singers who could perform pop music with an operatic approach, a genre that came to be known as “operatic pop” or “popera.”
Alongside Urs Buhler (Switzerland), Sébastien Izambaro (France), and David Miller, Marin was selected by Cowell to join this new group, Il Divo, in December 2003. A phenomenon was born.
Since the release of their self-titled debut album in 2004, Il Divo has sold over 30 million albums, topped the charts, and filled major venues around the world, as well as performing alongside stars such as Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand, and Julio Iglesias.
