Richard Clayderman played for the first time in Brazil in 1981, and since then he has always enjoyed great affection and devotion from his countless fans here. He has visited us several times, including participating prominently in the closing ceremony of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016.

In his extensive discography, with more than 80 titles, he reserved four of them for Brazilian composers: My Brazilian Collection Vols. 1 (1992), Vol.2 (1994) and Vol.3 (1995) and also My Bossa Nova Favorites (1997), rereading pearls of our music such as “Travessia”, “Café da Manhã”, “Romaria”, “Vitoriosa ” and “Carolina”, among others.

“In a certain way”, says the renowned French musician, “I want my shows in Brazil to be very romantic and full of emotion. On the other hand, I would like them to be very happy and fun too. After all, like all human beings, I need both love and joy to live my life in the best way possible.”

The repertoire of his performances is always varied, mixing popular music titles from different countries and also classical music. In interpretations, his usual class, which led the First Lady of the USA in the 1980s, Nancy Reagan (wife of President Ronald Reagan) to define him as “the prince of romance”.

Of course, one song is never left out of his set list, the remarkable “Ballade Pour Adeline”, his first hit, released in 1977, is one of the best-known piano instrumentals on the entire planet.

BIOGRAPHY

Richard Clayderman, stage name of Philippe Pagès, was born in Paris on December 28, 1953. His encounter with music happened very early. His father, a piano teacher, prepared the basis for his son's success and taught him to play this instrument from an early age; At age 6, Richard Clayderman read music better than his own language.

At the age of 12, he was accepted into the Music Conservatory and, at 16, he won his first competition, already anticipating a promising career as a classical pianist. However, to everyone's surprise, he put aside his classical studies and immersed himself in contemporary music.

At this time, his father became very ill and could no longer help him financially. To make ends meet, Clayderman began working as an accompanying musician. "I liked it and they paid well. That's how I moved away from classical music, even though it gave me the strong foundation for what I do now."

He quickly became in demand as a backing musician, playing with big stars like Michel Sardou, Thierry LeLuron and Johnny Halliday.  When asked what his ambition was at that time, he said, "I really don't want to be a star, I'm happy as an accompanying musician and playing in groups."

However, his life changed substantially in 1976, when Olivier Toussaint, a well-known French record producer, and his partner, Paul de Senneville, owners of the Delphine label, heard him play.

They were looking for a pianist to record the gentle ballad Paul composed for his newborn daughter, Adeline, called "Ballade Pour Adeline." At 23 years old, Philippe participated in the audition with 20 other candidates and, to his surprise, won.

"We liked him straight away," said Paul de Senneville. "His soft and special touch on the keyboard, combined with his reserved personality and attractive profile impressed Olivier Toussaint and me. We decided to choose him immediately."

Philippe Pagès' name was changed to Richard Clayderman (he adopted his grandmother's surname to avoid mispronouncing his real name outside of France), and the single took off, selling an astonishing 22 million copies in 38 countries .

"When I signed with him," said Toussaint, "I said that if we sold 10,000 singles it would be very good, because it was the era of 'disco music' and we couldn't bet much more than that on a ballad. We didn't imagine that the success could be so great."

It was the beginning of a remarkable success story. Richard Clayderman's distinctive style has earned him superstar status across the world. Today, he has recorded more than a thousand melodies and, in the words of a German journalist, "he was undoubtedly the person who most popularized the piano around the world since Beethoven."

Richard Clayderman created his own style through repertoire that combines his trademark with the quality of classics and pop music. He reached a world record in record sales, receiving an incredible 274 gold records and 70 platinum records.

Concerts are his passion.  "I love performing on stage," he says, "because I have direct contact with my audience. At the concert, with my musicians or a symphony orchestra, I like to mix different tempos, rhythms and styles and provoke all kinds of emotions.”

Since 1978, Clayderman has traveled all over the world, taking his own musical style to five continents. In 1987, he held his first concert in China, broadcast on the Asiavision chain and with an audience of more than 600 million viewers. During the following 15 months, he spread his popularity to Asia, performing in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Korea and Taiwan.

His tours also include Scandinavia, Greece, Sri Lanka, Malta, Germany, Hong Kong, Mexico, Turkey, Dominican Republic, United Kingdom, France, Brazil, Indonesia and the former Soviet Union.

Acclaimed by millions of people, "The Prince of Romance" (as he was nicknamed by Nancy Reagan, former first lady of the USA and wife of former American president Ronald Reagan) has traveled the planet as "The Most Successful Pianist in the World" and one of the biggest stars in the music world.
